Dark Days: The Forge – what’s it about?

Here is what writer Scott Snyder had to say in response to our request for a quick pitch on DARK NIGHTS: METAL…
“While investigating a mystery surrounding the strange substance known as Nth Metal, the Justice League makes the most shocking discovery in the history of the DCU…that beneath the known Multiverse exists a much vaster, more terrifying realm called the DARK MULTIVERSE! A roiling ocean of terrifying, phantom worlds where our greatest fears dwell, a realm where all the stories that should never, ever be told are lurking. Now, the League has opened the door, and the DARK KNIGHTS will lead the charge as the Dark Multiverse invades our planet in a full scale assault. None of our heroes will be safe after this summer’s most epic event, METAL!

“So strap in, because this August, comics’ most exciting creative team wants you to release your inner rock god, and follow them on an in-continuity, cosmos-spanning, multiverse-shaking adventure to the wildest, most shocking corners of the DCU.”
Available at your local comic store on Wednesday, June 14th!

Batmans! He skis, he fights assassins with hockey
sticks, Batman shows his versatility as a crime-fighter
through the eighties!

Spider-man comics from the eighties during the
Hobgoblin storyline!

spideyAnnuals_A_dart

I always liked Annuals as they were usually self-contained
stories so you didn’t have to worry about finding the
next issue – which was a problem for those of us who
bought comics in the ancient times before comic book
stores spread across the world! In these Annuals,
Mary Jane wears the webs, She-hulk teams up with Spidey
in a tale illustrated by John Byrne, Peter Parker and
MJ finally get married (though this may have been un-
imagined by Mephisto, I’ll have to check!) and the
totally wicked Spidey annual by Denny O’Neill and
Frank Miller where Doctor Doom tries to get powers
from Doctor Strange (medical competitiveness?)
but Spidey intervenes. A real classic.

spideyAnnuals_B_dart

These annuals were okay, too, but some were tied
into summer-long events like Evolutionary War and
Atlantis Attacks, which kind of put me off them.

spidey_todd_dart

When Todd McFarlane took over Spider-man, the book
kicked into high gear with some terrific stories by
David Michelinie featuring the Taskmaster, Sandman,
the Prowler and an “Action”-packed cover swipe that
could be called “Super.”

Amalgam Comics were kind of like a Marvel and DC
cross-over where characters from both universes
were re-imagined and combined. With the rivalry
(bordering on animosity!) between their parent
companies, Disney & Warner, it’s very unlikely
that the Amalgam (or any of the DC/Marvel crossovers)
will be reprinted anytime soon.

superlois_valentine

these two issues of All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison
and Frank Quitely would make a great Valentine gift.
It’s the story of Superman coming to terms with his
own mortality, trying to show Lois how he feels, having
to battle two super powered time-travelling jerks bent
on wooing Lois and so much more! Truly a gem of a comic
book series.

Kind of like seeing the Superior Foes of Spider-man
but back in the 80s!

Marking Marvel’s 25th anniversary, each Marvel comic
had this celebratory border on their covers during
this month in 1986.

The second part of Kraven’s Last Hunt by DeMateeis &

It’s pretty amazing what you can find when you tidy up a little! We’re still getting our back room figured out from the move (yeah, we know, over a year ago–we’ve been busy!), but in the process of cleaning and rearranging, we’ve unearthed some frankly fabulous treasures of yesteryear. Take a peek at these classic AMAZING SPIDER-MAN issues that are now priced and up for grabs!

Nothing fancy, y’know, just the first appearances of Mysterio, Sandman, and the Green Goblin. Run-of-the-mill stuff like that. But that’s not all! We also have some great Golden & Silver Age BATMAN & DETECTIVE COMICS issues as well!

We even have the second Marvel Comics appearance of KISS! Not printed with KISS blood, but it does have a pull-out poster.

Who knows what else we’ll find in the shadowy catacombs of the fabled Strange Adventures Back Room? Stay tuned!

It belongs in a museum!

#itbelongsinamuseum is a hashtag that’s been trending in the maritimes lately – it’s about the new exhibit on its way to Halifax’s Museum of Natural History starting on May 18th and continuing until August 26th when it leaves for Naples, Florida and then back into the unknown worlds!

What is it?

It’s called “Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television”

An original exhibition of costumes from Blade Runner, The Terminator, Star Trek and many more of the most popular films and television shows of all time, to tell the story how costumes play a crucial role in defining characters for visual storytelling in media. The collection was organized by empmuseum.org in Seattle.

The exhibition examines how costume design incorporates color, style, scale, materials, historical traditions and cultural cues to help performers and audiences engage with the characters being portrayed. The exhibition’s purpose is to offer museum visitors new ways of seeing characters as defined by their costumes.

Organized into sections based on themes such as “Heroes and Villains,” “Creating the Character,” and “Caped Crusaders” as well as specific franchises such as Star Trek.
Exhibition Includes:

Hat worn by Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in the film The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Leather jacket worn by Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Indy’s whip from the film Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Leather jacket worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film The Terminator (1984)

Costume worn by Dan Aykroyd as Dr. Raymond Stantz in the film Ghostbusters II (1989).

Embroidered robe worn by actor Joe Turkel as Eldon Tyrell, creator of the replicants, in Blade Runner (1982)

Costume worn by George Clooney as Batman in the film Batman & Robin (1997)

Tunic and sash worn by William Shatner as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek episode “Mirror Mirror” (1967)
and more!
