It belongs in a museum!

#itbelongsinamuseum is a hashtag that’s been trending in the maritimes lately – it’s about the new exhibit on its way to Halifax’s Museum of Natural History starting on May 18th and continuing until August 26th when it leaves for Naples, Florida and then back into the unknown worlds!

What is it?

It’s called “Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television”

An original exhibition of costumes from Blade Runner, The Terminator, Star Trek and many more of the most popular films and television shows of all time, to tell the story how costumes play a crucial role in defining characters for visual storytelling in media. The collection was organized by empmuseum.org in Seattle.

The exhibition examines how costume design incorporates color, style, scale, materials, historical traditions and cultural cues to help performers and audiences engage with the characters being portrayed. The exhibition’s purpose is to offer museum visitors new ways of seeing characters as defined by their costumes.

Organized into sections based on themes such as “Heroes and Villains,” “Creating the Character,” and “Caped Crusaders” as well as specific franchises such as Star Trek.
Exhibition Includes:

Hat worn by Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in the film The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Leather jacket worn by Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Indy’s whip from the film Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Leather jacket worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film The Terminator (1984)

Costume worn by Dan Aykroyd as Dr. Raymond Stantz in the film Ghostbusters II (1989).

Embroidered robe worn by actor Joe Turkel as Eldon Tyrell, creator of the replicants, in Blade Runner (1982)

Costume worn by George Clooney as Batman in the film Batman & Robin (1997)

Tunic and sash worn by William Shatner as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek episode “Mirror Mirror” (1967)
and more!

AUGUSTUS NOTES

our August sale is still one. Save 20% off all comics, graphic novels and toys. Especially good if you need some reading for the beach or cottage! We have some terrific EC annuals which collect 3-5 of the original EC classics such as Vault of Horror, Frontline Combat and Piracy! (one of my favourites to read on the beach)

The big DC relaunch starts on August 31st with the release of Flashpoint #5 and Justice League #1. We’re thinking of taking part in the midnight release so folks in the maritimes will be among the very first in the world to read these comics!

I thought this was kind of cool:

Marvel Hero cupcakes you can make at home! We are bringing in the Han Solo in carbonite ice cube trays…maybe we should try to get these as well?

Do you have the twitter?
Do you follow us?
Fredericton tweets under the
handle @StrangeNB; Dartmouth does so as @DartmouthComix; and Halifax is @strangeadventrz! We post things that hopefully will interest you or at the very least, entertain you for 140 or so characters. We also use twitter to mention spotlight sales, special deals, stuff we found, movie ticket giveaways, etc.

FanExpo takes place in a couple of weeks in Toronto. Dave and Nathan from the Halifax store will be heading there. Nathan for his first-ever comic convention, and Dave to debut the latest issue of Slam-a-rama! Issue #4 of Slam-a-rama will make its first appearance at his table in the FanExpo artist alley. I think his booth is #128 and he’s sharing with The Wordburglar and other fine comic book folks. If you are going to FanExpo, be sure to say “hi!” We’ll have copies of Slam-a-rama in our stores as soon as Dave gets back to Halifax.

Darwyn Cooke (darwyncooke.ca):
Saturday 1-5PM • Sunday 11AM – 3PM
Darwyn’s latest book is an adaptation of Richard Stark’s crime thriller The Outfit and like the previous book, The Hunter, it’s a New York Times best-seller!

Caanan Grall (occasionalcomics.com):
Friday 2-4PM & 6-9PM
Saturday 9-11AM & 1-3PM
According to Caanan’s website, he is an Australian cartoonist formerly living in Toronto, now Nova Scotia! He travelled to Canada because they have lotsof water and Degrassi. He has a formal degree in advertising/copywriting, and no desire to use it. His big break came with a local Ballarat company, Wizard Books (later ziptales.com) illustrating children’s literacy books. Since then he has gone on to do uncountable storyboards, some work for Cambridge Press, and Oxford Press, some self-published comics, and the 180 page Celadore at zudacomics.com, a story about monster busting, wish fulfillment, spitting in cereal, and whatever else I could fit in there.

Faith Erin Hicks (faitherinhicks.com):
Saturday 10AM – 2PM
Faith’s bio reads: Born in the wilds of British Columbia, the young Faith frolicked among the Sasquatch native to the province before moving to Ontario at age five. There she was homeschooled with her three brothers, and developed an unnatural passion for galloping around on horseback, though never without a proper helmet (because you only get one skull). After twenty years of suffering through Ontario’s obscenely hot summers, she migrated east, and now lives beside the other ocean in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She worked in animation for a bit, and now draws comics full time. She’s not sure how that happened either.

Dave Howlett (tucocomics.blogspot.com)
Saturday 2-4PM • Sunday 11AM – 3PM
Dave manages the Halifax branch of Strange Adventures and has been
writing and drawing comics for years. He’s designed several album
covers and done illustration work for many newspapers, websites, and
magazines. His newest books are the first two issues of Slamarama and
he’s just released a collected edition of his Scenester comic series.

Mark Oakley (iboxpublishing.com)
Friday, Saturday & Sunday – all days!
Originally from Ontario, Mark makes his home in the wilds of Wolfville and has been self-publishing his comics and graphic novels since the 1980s. Thieves & Kings, Stardrop, The Walking Mage are among his best known works.
